Sixth Annual Demo Day!

Did you know Telluride was the first town in the world to light its streets in 1890 with the long distance application of AC Coil invented by Nikola Tesla at the Ames Hydroelectric Power Plant? This is the spirit of innovation that embodies those who live and reside in Telluride. This same spirit is found in Telluride Venture Accelerator (TVA), which embraces and advances startup companies who have new ideas that will enhance not only the Telluride community, but the world. TVA would like to invite you to its sixth annual Demo Day on July 2nd at the Michael D. Palm Theater.

What exactly is Demo Day you might ask? Not only is it a platform to bring the Telluride community together, it’s also a chance for each of the five startup companies, chosen from the hundreds applicants, to share what they have been working on over the past 17 weeks. The companies are excited to present the progress, achievements, and ambitions of their innovative companies. The goal of Demo Day is to rally the community around these five companies and continue to foster a culture of innovation and creativity in our region. Four out of the five of the companies are based in Colorado and we know you will leave inspired about what they are working on.

The 2018 five qualifying startup companies include:

Why startups in Telluride? As a local business or community member, it can be challenging to survive high rents, the off season, and increasingly unpredictable weather patterns. The startups TVA works with are not dependent on snowflakes or real estate prices, so it aims to provide additional opportunities and complement the existing local economy. Everyone knows that the secret to what makes Telluride so special is its genuine sense of community - TVA is helping cultivate the next generation. To date, TVA has graduated 26 startup companies from its progressive program while raising over $24 million as well as creating more than 90 jobs. Ultimately, TVA aims “to support the growth of five $10 million dollar businesses in the Telluride region; companies like Wagner Skis, Western Rise, and Felt are great examples of the type of business that can create high paying, year round jobs which ultimately help us create a more diverse and sustainable economy” commented Marc Nager, Managing Director of TVA.

To help emphasize the importance and potential impact of TVA’s efforts, they are excited to announce this year’s keynote speaker, Luis Benitez - the Director for the Office of Outdoor Recreation Industry in the State of Colorado. Benitez is an avid mountaineer, guide and adventurer. He focuses on applying personal lessons he has learned in the mountains to everyday life and in business. No one can relate to the challenges and opportunities in communities like Telluride more than Luis, and his dedication to helping foster more creativity and innovation across the state and in the outdoor industry sets the stage perfectly for what’s possible in this mountain community.
